Do I need to work out every day to get strong?

Short answer: no. Not even close.

At Woodshed we coach adults from Littleton, Harvard, Groton, Acton, Ayer, Westford, and Boxborough. Most of them are 45 to 65, most of them have jobs and families and lives that do not cooperate on a fixed schedule. In seventeen years of coaching this population, here is what actually works.

Two full-body strength and conditioning sessions a week is a real baseline.

Two sessions, done consistently for six months, will change how you carry groceries up the stairs. How you get off the floor. How you feel walking up a flight of stairs at the airport without breathing hard. That is not a small thing. Most of our members hit that two-session mark every week, and they get real returns for it.

Three sessions a week is our sweet spot.

Three is what a lot of our members work up to and stay at for years. It is enough training volume to build real strength and real capacity, with enough recovery built in that you can keep showing up week after week. Most adults with a job and a family do not need more than this.

Four sessions a week is more than most people need.

It is also about as much recovery as most people can handle. Some of our higher-volume members go there and thrive. Most do not need to.

What a real training week looks like at three days:

  • Monday: full-body strength and conditioning
  • Wednesday: full-body strength and conditioning
  • Saturday: full-body strength and conditioning

Rest of the week: walk your neighborhood, play with your kids or grandkids, live your life. Movement matters. Formal training does not need to happen every day.

The mistake I see most often

Going all-out for two weeks, missing three, feeling like a failure, and quitting. Two sessions a week for six months beats four sessions a week for three weeks by a mile.

Consistency in a shape that fits your life will outpace intensity that only fits somebody else’s.
