This is a question I get asked often, especially by adults who are getting close to actually starting somewhere and want to make sure they pick the format that fits them.
The honest answer is that it depends on you. Here’s what actually matters when you’re deciding.
What each format is
Class (or large group strength class). Ten to fifteen adults in a room, one coach leading. Same program for the day, adapted for each person as needed. Coaching happens in the room, live, while the workout is going.
Small group. Two to six people with a coach. Similar structure to a class but with more individual attention and more room to adapt the workout for each body.
1-on-1. Just you and a coach for the whole hour. Everything is built for you specifically. Loads, progressions, cues, timing, all yours.
Now here are the honest signs that each one might be your fit.
Signs a group class fits you
You want structured coached strength work that fits into your regular week without being your whole life.
You do well with a little energy in the room. Not so much that it wears you out. Enough that you feel like you’re doing this with other people.
You want the accountability of showing up at a set time on set days.
You don’t have a complex medical situation that requires the coach to be watching only you.
You value cost. Group is the most affordable coached option most gyms offer.
Signs a small group fits you
You want more of the coach’s attention than a full class allows, but you also like the presence of a small group of people.
You have a specific thing going on (a body issue, an early comeback, a goal that needs more attention) but a full 1-on-1 isn’t necessary.
You want a hybrid: your program built for you, but the room has a few other people in it working alongside.
Signs 1-on-1 fits you
Your schedule doesn’t work for group class times. You need training at 11 AM on a Tuesday, or at 4 on a Wednesday. Group schedules don’t bend to that.
You have a specific issue that needs constant coaching attention. A serious back or shoulder history. A post-surgery return. A body that needs eyes on it every rep.
You have a very specific goal that needs full-attention programming. A specific event, a specific lift target, a specific body composition goal.
You have the budget and want the fastest, most personalized progress possible.
The mistake most people make
The mistake is picking a format based on what you think of as “serious” or “for real gym people.”
Some adults show up assuming they should start with 1-on-1 because it feels more serious. Others assume they should start with a group class because 1-on-1 feels excessive.
The right question is about fit for your body, your schedule, and your goals. Assumptions about what “gym people” do won’t help you decide.
What we do at Woodshed
We offer all three. Most of our members are in group strength classes. Some are in small group. Some are in 1-on-1. Many have moved between them over the years as their life changed.
None of the three is inherently better than the others. They serve different situations, and the right one for you depends on where you are.
