How do I know if I’m doing the lifts right?

Short answer: you probably don’t. And that’s not an insult. It’s how the human body works.

You cannot see yourself lift. You feel where you think your body is. That’s rarely where it actually is. That gap between feeling and reality is why form questions are one of the most common concerns for adults training on their own.

Here’s what actually helps.

The mirror lies more than it tells the truth

Mirrors show you your front. Most form breakdowns happen at your back — a rounded lower back on a deadlift, a knee caving on a squat, a shoulder shrugging on a press. You cannot see any of it in the mirror. The angle is wrong.

Even worse: mirrors give you a static, flat image. Lifts are dynamic. What looked right in the mirror at the top might have been ugly at the bottom.

The video helps, but not enough

Recording yourself is better than nothing. You can catch some big things. What you can’t do is know what to look for. A video of a bad rep is still a bad rep — knowing it’s bad is not the same as knowing how to fix it.

Videos also lie about depth, bar path, and speed depending on angle. Two feet to the left and the whole rep looks different.

A good coach ten feet away

Nothing replaces this. A coach watching you live sees:

  • The exact moment your form breaks down
  • Which cue will fix it (there are usually 3-5 possible fixes for any error; picking the right one is coaching)
  • Whether the fix worked on the next rep
  • How your body responds over sessions and adjusts accordingly

That’s why elite powerlifters, world-class athletes, and lifelong lifters all still hire coaches. They know the movements cold. They just can’t see themselves.

Signs your form is probably off

If any of these are happening consistently, form is likely the issue:

  • Joint pain during or after specific lifts
  • Being sore in places you shouldn’t be (lower back after a squat means bar path or hip hinge problems)
  • Progress that stalls despite adding weight
  • One side feeling harder than the other and getting worse over time

What to do next

If you’re training on your own and any of these ring true, don’t just push through. That’s how small form issues become chronic pain.
