Saturday Strength: Why Are People Walking with Weighted Vests?

You’ve probably seen it.

Someone walking through your neighborhood or on the rail trail… wearing what looks like a tactical vest.

It’s not a fashion statement—it’s a weighted vest. And more and more folks are wearing them during walks or hikes.

So what’s the deal?

What Does a Weighted Vest Do?

In simple terms, a weighted vest adds load to your bodyweight. That means your muscles, bones, and cardiovascular system have to work a little harder while you’re doing something you already do: walking.

The benefits?

  • Slightly increased calorie burn
  • Improved leg and core strength
  • Better bone density over time
  • A stronger heart and lungs

But maybe most important—it gives your walk a little edge.

For folks who already walk regularly and want to level up without jumping into sprints or gym workouts, a vest can be a great bridge.

But Is It Safe?

Yes, if you ease in. The biggest mistake we see is going too heavy, too fast.

Most beginner vests start at 10-20 pounds, which is plenty for most adults–we want to begin with around 5-10% of your bodyweight. The key is making sure the vest fits snugly, the weight is evenly distributed, and that you’re walking with good posture.

No slumping. No leaning forward. Just tall, strong walking.

It should feel challenging, not punishing.

Is It Right for You?

A weighted vest walk isn’t magic. It’s just another tool in the strength-and-conditioning toolbox.

But if you:

  • Walk regularly and want more challenge
  • Want to build real-world strength without the gym (yet)
  • Are looking for ways to age actively and stay strong into your 60s and beyond…

Then yes, it might be time to try it out—with guidance.

That’s what we do here at Woodshed. Whether you’re lifting weights, walking more, or just trying to find a consistent plan—you’ll get the support you need, every step of the way.
