Strength training to keep up with grandkids

This is the reason a lot of the people we coach walk through the door.

It is the three-year-old who wants to be held and the seven-year-old who wants to be chased.

Grandparenting looks different when you can do the physical parts. When you can get on the floor for a Lego session and get back up without a hand. When you can hold the baby for an hour without your lower back tapping out. When you can lift a toddler onto your shoulders and it is fun instead of a calculation.

That is what strength training gives you back.

What “keeping up” actually requires

If you break down what an involved grandparent physically does in a normal day with young grandkids, here is the list:

  • Get down to the floor. Get back up.
  • Lift 20-40 pounds off the ground repeatedly, sometimes above your head.
  • Hold that weight against your body for stretches of time.
  • Walk while carrying it.
  • Chase, catch, and swing that weight without pulling something.
  • Do all of that on demand, not on your schedule.

This is a strength job. It just uses kids instead of barbells.

The training that builds this

At Woodshed we coach a lot of adults in their 50s, 60s, and 70s specifically for this. The training is not complicated. Squat variations. Deadlift variations. Overhead press variations. Rows. Carries. Two to three days a week of full-body strength and conditioning, scaled to what your body can handle right now.

That is the program.

Six months of this, done consistently, changes what you can do with your grandkids. A year of it changes what you can do with your grandkids for the next twenty years.

The part nobody tells you

If you wait until you feel out of shape to start, you will already be behind. The strength you have at 55 is what you are going to keep or lose over the next decade. Most adults who lose it lose it slowly, from doing nothing about it. Most adults who keep it, keep it because they are lifting weights two or three times a week.

Grandkids grow up fast. The window where they want to be picked up and swung around closes faster than you think. Being in the shape to say yes to that is worth the two or three hours a week it costs.
