The honest answer: some people do. Most do not.
If you sign up at Woodshed and after a month you realize this is not the right fit, we can talk about it. We would rather you leave and find something that works for you than stay in something that does not.
That said, here is what usually happens.
Most people who worry about hating it end up loving it
The fear of hating something you have committed to is a specific fear. It usually comes from prior experiences: an old gym membership that felt bad, a workout program that made you feel worse than when you started, a coach who was not paying attention.
Those experiences are real. Here is what usually happens at Woodshed instead:
A few weeks of adjustment (learning the movements, getting used to being a person who trains), followed by months of showing up and feeling steadily better. The people who stay usually pass through a “this is not for me” moment somewhere in weeks 2-3, and then decide it actually is for them by week 5.
What people who leave usually tell us
The people who do leave in the first few months usually leave for one of these reasons:
- Life event (job change, move, family emergency, illness) that made scheduling impossible
- Financial change that made membership hard to maintain
- Discovery that they wanted something different (a boxing gym, a yoga studio, a sport-specific coach)
Rarely does someone leave because they signed up and hated the actual training. When someone tells us they signed up and hated it, we almost always find out something else was going on that we could have talked about.
What we do if you are not feeling it
If you are three weeks in and something is off, tell us. That is what your coaches are for. Common fixes:
- Adjusting your schedule (day, time, class size)
- Changing the movements you are doing (progressions, regressions, alternatives)
- Talking through what you thought you were signing up for versus what you got
Most “I hate this” moments are actually “I need this one thing to be different” moments. We can usually adjust.
The honest bottom line
You might not love it. If you do not, we will talk about it, and if it is really not for you, we will help you figure out what is.
Most people who worry about hating it end up on our whiteboard three years later. That is the honest average.
