What’s the minimum time I can spend and still get stronger?

I get some version of this question in almost every Clarity Call. Usually it is asked with a little apology attached, like the person is embarrassed that they cannot commit to more.

You do not have to apologize. It is a fair question, and here is the honest answer.

Two 45-60 minute sessions a week. That is the floor.

Below that, you can maintain what you have. To actually get stronger, two real sessions is the honest minimum.

What “real sessions” means

Full body. Squat pattern, hinge pattern, push, pull, and either a carry or a conditioning finisher. Weight that is challenging for the last few reps. Progressive: the weight goes up over weeks and months as you get stronger.

Two of those a week is the minimum that builds strength.

What this actually looks like at Woodshed

For an adult with a job and family, the honest answer is:

  • 45 to 60 minutes per session, gym door to gym door
  • 2 sessions per week (Monday/Thursday, Tuesday/Friday, Wednesday/Saturday, whatever fits)
  • Repeat for six months

That is a total commitment of roughly 2 hours of gym time per week.

Why once a week does not build

Your body adapts to what you ask it to do. Once a week maintains what you have. Twice a week is enough repeated stress that your body starts responding by building capacity.

Why more than three has diminishing returns

For most adults over 40, three sessions a week is the sweet spot. Four is manageable. Five is more than the body can recover from without the schedule and rest of a full-time athlete.

The consistency multiplier

Two sessions a week for six months puts you 48 sessions deep. Two sessions a week for a year is 96 sessions. Two sessions a week for a decade is nearly 1,000.

Somebody 1,000 sessions in looks and moves like a different person than somebody who has done 20 sessions in the last two years while promising themselves they will do more.
